The scariest job in the world? Meet the workers building a 3-foot-wide wooden road on a vertical cliff.

If you suffer from vertigo, look away.

While some people would find it unbearable to get close to the edge of a cliff, these Chinese workers are building a meter-wide wooden plank road on the face of a cliff thousands of meters high.

Once completed, it is hoped that tourists will flock to admire the view.

The “road” – the width of a table – they are assembling is on Shifou Mountain, in Hunan province, and stands 90 degrees vertical, with no slopes or alcoves.

What’s more, the workers, who hail from China’s eastern Jiangxi province, are working on this road with apparently few, if any, safety precautions.

Don’t look down: Balancing on the edge, this builder inspects his work. When completed, the road will stretch for 1.8 miles, making it the longest tourist road in China.

I can see for miles: This worker reaches out to tighten the scaffolding on the “road”, which is the width of a dinner table.

The long drop: Once the road is built, the question is how many visitors will want to use it.

The scene is terrifying for those from health- and safety-conscious countries like ours. The planks look distinctly thin and wobbly, and a fall to certain death is just inches away, but this doesn’t seem to faze the workers who toil fearlessly every day.

Once completed, the road will stretch for 1.8 miles, making it China’s longest tourist trail.

The question on many people’s minds is: “Who will be brave enough to go all the way around the road? Who will be brave enough to go around it once it’s finished?
